Congratulations, you’re going to be a dad! Now that the news is out, what do you do to get ready to bring your baby home?
The good news is that depending on how far the due date is, you should have at least a few months to prepare. Try to have everything ready by around week 32 of pregnancy, unless of course there is a good chance that baby will come early.
From the get go, 100% support your wife with what items are important to her. For example, diaper bag, cloth vs disposable diapers, nursery decor, etc. While this will be a big life change for you, don’t lose sight of the fact that she is turning food into a human being, and that human being will come out of her body.
You’ve got to have the basics covered, like a diaper bag, diapers, forumla, crib, etc. Here is a short list of items that I took the lead in selecting and why I like them:
Infant Carrier and Car Seat
Yes, there is a difference.
An infant carrier is a removable holder for an infant that has specially designed bases that are secured to the car. This makes it convenience to have your baby in more than one car without having to buckle and unbuckle the seat each time.
A car seat is usually secured directly to the car, or using a seat belt, and is not designed to be transported often.
You must have an infant
- Diaper bag
- The mom will want to have a special diaper bag outfitted with all the things for baby. Just get her the diaper bag she wants, after all she will be carrying it around most of the time and it is essential to have certain items on hand at all times for the first 12 months of life.
- Car seat
- You should not leave the hospital unless you have a properly installed car seat, or infant carrier with base system.
- Baby monitor (audio and video)
